The FBI’s Hazardous Devices School “HDS” is located at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.
The school was established in 1971 and ran jointly by the FBI and the U.S. Army. The FBI has now primary responsibility for the training. It is the only facility currently in the country that trains and certifies the nation’s public safety bomb technicians.

The badge is similar to the military version of the EOD. Each of the 3 badges is earned during the technician’s years of service.
The Basic HDT badge is issued after completion of the basic training, as well as 24 months of on-the-job field training. The Senior Badge is issued after 3 years and the Master badge after 7 years.

Each part of this badge has a meaning.
The Wreath is symbolic of the achievements by minimizing accident potentials through the ingenuity and devotion to duty of its members. It is in the memory of the EOD personnel who gave their lives while performing their duties.
The Bomb Copied from the design of the World War II Bomb Disposal Badge, the bomb represents the historic and primary objective of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal attack, the unexploded bomb.
The three fins represent the significant areas of conventional, nuclear, and chemical/biological interest.
The Lightning Bolts symbolize the destructive power of the bomb, the professionalism, and courage of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal “EOD” personnel in their endeavors to reduce hazards, as well as to render explosive ordnance safe.
The Shield Represents the HDT mission – to prevent a detonation and protect the surrounding area and property.
The scale of Justice represents law enforcement.
